Marshal of the Royal Air Force William Sholto Douglas, 1st Baron Douglas of Kirtleside [1893 1969] was a senior commander in the Royal Air Force and a World War I fighter pilot. Douglas began his military career in 1914 with the Royal Field Artillery and transferred to the Royal Flying Corps in 1915. Douglas was assigned to No.14 squadron as a fighter pilot and served over the front with No. 8 Squadron and on a particular patrol dueled with Hermann Goring. Douglas then served as Flight Commander No. 18 Squadron and Commanding Officer of Squadrons No. 43, No. 84, and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Military Cross and the French Croix de Guerre for his service during the war. During the 1920's he attended R.A.F Staff College and served as a flight instructor and test pilot for Hanley Page. During the 1930's he served as a Wing Commander and rose through the ranks and held several high ranking commands. Upon the entry of England into World War II Douglas was the Commander-In-Chief of Fighter Command and was responsible for rebuilding the command's strength after the attrition of the Battle of Britain. Douglas was instrumental in Britain's air war against German and retired from the military in 1947 as Marshal of the Royal Air Force. Listed for auction is a exceedingly rare and desirable Combats in the Air report signed by William Sholto Douglas. The report is dated April 20, 1918, and is a typed report of the events taken by Captain A. W. Beauchamp Proctor [a South African ace and recipient of the Victoria Cross] during his attack of a German D.F.W. over Marcelcave where he states ''I was able to empty a drum of Lewis''. The battle report is signed at the bottom ''W. S. Douglas'' in black fountain pen above his typed and ink stamped rank as Major and Commander of the 84 Squadron. The report measures 7.75 x 12.00 inches and is in fine condition with expected toning and the only fault is along the top edge of the report. Original and signed World War I Combat Reports are very desirable and very scarce to obtain for collectors. This example is signed by a prominent World War I fighter pilot and World War II R.A.F. commander. The autograph is authentic and the Combat Report will be a desirable addition to any aviation collection and is ideal for display.
