Rare Orig Photos From Hayden Campbell's ScrapBook: 1938 CAMPBELL FORD V-8 PUSHER.Hayden S. "Hadie" Campbell organized the Campbell Aircraft Co. in St. Joseph, MO and while VP of Barling Aircraft developed this Ford V-8 powered aircraft to compete for the 1936 Bureau of Air Commerce light plane competition. It was a beautiful all-magnesium monocoque fuselage, twin boom, twin tail. tricycle gear aircraft with a steerable nose wheel. Well ahead of its time, test pilot Walter Brownell lost power during its test flight and crashed after take off in a swamp near Bollin Field. THESE PHOTOS came directly from Campbell's personal scrapbook which I acquired years ago and was in such poor condition that I was forced to remove the photos and the many newspaper articles about Campbell and his aircraft. The aircraft was inspected for the 1936 competition by U. S. Bureau of Air Commerce chief Eugene Vidal, father of author Gore Vidal and at 1000 pounds and an expected price of ,650 was expected to do well in the competition. The material was removed from a high-sulphur content scrapbook and includes two original 3.5 X 5 black and white photographs, two 3.25 X 4.5 copied photographs, approximately fifteen reproduced newspaper articles, and a copies of two Charles Vickers typewritten pieces apparently from a publication that must have been important to Campbell. All photos the newspaper articles (these are copies) were
original to the Campbell scrapbook. (I've just shown a few of the newspaper article copies. Fourteen pages of document copies are included.)

All photographs are continuous-tone photographs unless described otherwise. Printed photos - photos printed with a dot matrix as in magazines and newspapers - are clearly described as such. Most of my manufacturer photos (Boeing, Curtiss, Martin, etc.) came from an author, USMC Col. Robert Rankin, who wrote in-house articles and other aviation related pieces for aircaft manufacturers in the 1940's and 1950's. He amassed an enormous collection of original vintage photos which I purchased in the early 1970's.
