CURTISS BIPLANE
In the ranks of aviation pioneers Glenn H. Curtiss stands just behind the Wright
brothers. A mechanical genius, Curtiss not only raced motorcycles, but designed
powerful, light-weight engines for them. When his interest turned to aviation.
these advanced engines proved ideal. By 1909 his Gold Bug and Golden Flyer
planes had won the first aviation prize offered in America and the first international
air race at Reims, France. Curtiss biplanes became popular immediately. The
pusher in this photograph, at an air meet in Chicago in 1911, belonged to stunter
and barnstormer Jimmie Ward, The pilot sat just ahead of the 50-horsepower V43
engine and its radiator; other features were aileron controls and a tricycle landing
gear. Nor were Glenn Curtiss' efforts limited to landplanes; he built the first
successful American seaplane, and is considered the "father of naval aviation.
