Henri Farre was born in Foix, France in 1871. He is best known for his paintings of WWI aerial battles and portraits of famous Aviators . Farre flew in the cockpits along with the pilots of the famed Lafayette Escadrille, sketching the air battles as they were taking place. He painted a portrait of Lillian Gatlin after her historic flight which we sold a couple years ago…Lillian Gatlin was an early pioneer in aviation and was very close to famed pilot Lincoln Beachey. She gained much fame at the time for becoming the first woman to fly across the United States and did so with the US Airmail in 1922. This portrait was done in honor of that achievement. The actual portrait of Lillian Gatlin measured 32x28 inches…He also produced a limited number of prints of this portrait of which the framed item is one…Also produced were photos of the portrait one of which is also included that were handed out by Ms. Gatlin as souvenirs …This all came from the Lillian Gatlin estate whose archive we have been selling for several years.
